Moving — is it running away from yourself or a necessity?

Recently, the topic of relocation has become more relevant.

Perhaps this is due to the pandemic, when people seek to move out of the city or to places where they can move freely and not feel trapped. Perhaps for other reasons.

Throughout history, people have constantly migrated somewhere. And everyone had their own reason for moving.

In this article, we will figure out when moving is an escape from oneself, and when it is truly a necessity.

We would be glad to hear your comments on this topic.

What is your true reason for moving?

With any move, whether you change your city, country, or apartment, the constant variable is you.

“You can’t run away from yourself” is a well-known saying that has been justified for several decades.

A huge number of people from CIS countries have moved abroad and continue to do so. Unfortunately, if you haven’t changed yourself, you won’t run away from yourself.

If you are running from problems in your country and think that you will move there and everything will be great, it is important to understand that the main generator of problems in your life is the person themselves.

Therefore, when you try to escape by moving, oddly enough, you arrive, some time is spent on adaptation, and after that you are hit by the same problems, but in a completely new place.

And so you find out that the government and the country have nothing to do with it. Everything starts with you.

Whatever actions you take, it is important to understand your motives, goals, desires, wants — to explain to yourself why you are doing this.

If one of the points there is “to escape,” realize that this is not a solution; you can’t run away from yourself. Period.

Although the reasons may sound under different guises: “I’m running from dishonesty, inauthenticity,” and so on.

Therefore, if you have seriously decided to move, approach it responsibly. Write it down and look closely until you understand what you are trying to run away from inside yourself.

The line between «outgrowing» and running away

It happens that you have truly outgrown the place, the country where you live. But understanding whether it is running away or you have truly outgrown it is not so simple. There is a very fine line here that you need to feel.

Have I outgrown this and can no longer be here because I feel I deserve more? Or am I still running away? This also applies to changing jobs or activities.

Our audience is people who suddenly realized they can no longer bear to be, for example, in a job they dislike, where there is gossip and a tyrannical boss. And they want to break free.

The situation with moving is the same; internally it is the same thing.

Therefore, you must have a rock-solid decision that it must be this way and no other. At the same time, internally, if the decision has been made, there will be no doubts whatsoever.

Mass hysteria of moving. How not to succumb to it

Now people have started moving en masse to places without strict restrictions or to the countryside, where they can go out for fresh air more often. This situation is related to the pandemic.

If you have a desire to also move, it suggests that you are a follower. Everyone ran, and I ran with them. Think about it: are you choosing what you want yourself, or are you running with the herd just in case?

I believe our audience is not the type to do that. Even if they feel the urge to run along with everyone else, they will stop and think.

Do you give in to mass hysteria? This is very simple to check. How do you react to fashion trends, style… the chase for the new iPhone? Do you immediately rush to buy everything, or do you try it on for yourself, for your own lifestyle?

Why the adaptation period is important

Any serious change in life, including a move, should always be accompanied by an adaptation period. It takes about a year.

During this time, everything intensifies (fears, feelings of being lost); it all comes to the surface until you arrange a new harmonious space for yourself.

Our society is ruthless, and we ourselves are ruthless towards ourselves. We don’t give ourselves the right to rest, to lie on the couch an extra time. Let alone talk about an adaptation period.

Give yourself this time to get used to living in a new place; do not make hasty conclusions about your new place of residence.

How to choose where to move

If you don’t know how to choose, learn. When your level of safety is tied to external events, to external reference points, you seek confirmation from outside and cannot make a choice.

My acquaintances got into a car and drove from the far east, stopping in cities that caught their attention. They walked around, looked closely, “read” the place where they would feel good, and eventually settled where they liked it the most.

Whether it is worth looking for some external landmarks to choose where to live, I do not know.

There are schools of astrologers who can determine, based on your date of birth and other parameters, which city would be best for you for business, relationships, and so on.

Learn to make a choice, learn to feel what is inside you. There are different methods, including body-oriented therapy and kinesiology.

Set signs for yourself, for example, if I see an ostrich, I will go this way, if I see a giraffe, that way.

Emigration and the difference in mentality. What to consider

If you want to move to a specific country but do not know the local mentality, join groups for that country and read what people write, whether they like everything, whether everything suits them.

Before burning bridges, gather all the information so you do not regret it later.

Consider your own characteristics, whether you can essentially integrate into a foreign culture.

Before moving permanently, go on a reconnaissance trip, live in that country for a couple of weeks or a month; you might not like it.

Now you will have more clarity and understanding if you are facing the question of moving.

Write in the comments what was your reason for moving to another city or country, if you have had such an experience in your life? And if you are only about to move, share your insights!
